Hi fellas,

Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced spray gun that is good for spraying an even coat of lacquer? I've been using a regular spray can but I get that orange peel effect and buddy of mine who owns a paintshop told me that if you spray your lacquer with a good spray gun, all you need after is a quick buff and the part will have that mirror shine. And since I have an air compressor at home I thought I'd have a go with a proper spray gun.

Cheers,
Stan

A decent quality HVLP gun with a 1.5mm tip should do the job. That's what I use but the usual advice applies regard tools, buy the best you can afford.
Also get yourself some clear plastic primer from your local automotive paint supplier, you may get a good deal on a quality gun there as well.
If its a smallish part just wipe the primer over the part with a cloth, two coats is usually recommended or you can spray it on. The first few coats of clear want to be just mist coats then you can build up the coats to the thickness/ gloss you want. As your friend says if applied correctly a quick buff is all that should be required.

make sure the air consumption of the gun does not exceed the output of your compressor, i find a small touch up gun is more than capable when  used on smaller items i.e. bike fairing and fuel tanks etc..

What's the difference between a normal and a touch up spray gun?

The size, holds less paint and usually has a smaller tip.

In that case, what tip size should I go for? 0.8? 1.0?

That depends on the viscosity of the paint you are spraying. Thicker the paint bigger the tip/nozzle you need. With a 1mm you should be fine with most clearcoats but may struggle with High Build Primer if you are wanting to spray patterns/moulds etc.
