I use infusion with no gel coat on all my items then clear coat them.... My parts are very large and complex so I have the bags occasionally fail slightly which leaves pinholes, these parts would be scrap if they were gel coated but with raw resin I can do a heavy clear coat and recover them.

Also clear coat gives a glossier finish which is a must on car panels

I always stick one side of the V weave down first with great effort to get it straight and true, then I overlap the second layer to give the join strength... its not exactly easy, but it is acheivable

Looks great! When you pul the newly infused part out to the mold do you sand much before clearcoating? What grit? Thanks.

yes, I have so far almost never made the same part twice from the same mould, so each time is the first time and thus woking out were to put the inlet/outlets can be fun.

With the front clip shown above, I ran out of slow resin hardener and had to use fast, room temp was over 40deg so it was going off to fast to flow to some of the corners even though I had a lot of entry point I had to break the bag in 4 different places to introduce resin (1 area was size of a coin) so the bag had a huge amount of air introduced  and thus pinholes on surface in those places SadHeavy coats of resin using a 2 gun process (trick from Matt at EC) got rid of these pinholes but they would have been trapped under the gel coat if I had made the part that way and ruined it.

ok I guess you mean in some place there is not enough bag pressure, so if you were gel coating the mold before the infusion, you'd have places were the infused resin would not fill properly the voids, between the gel coat layer and the clothe, is that it ?

thank you Smile

That bonnet is really impressive!! wonderful!!

I hope I will be able todo something like that one day!

For the adhesive... I use this: adesivo spray Mates I-tak

which I think is the same as airtac, and even if it's not epoxy based, I had no problem of residues... I use it very lightly but in fact you don't need much to make the fabric stick to the mould..

A little Offtopic for moderators... why if I quote a post my reply goes into the quote??? I have to write it before the quote or it doesn't work.. maybe I'm doing something wrong? I've seen it happens also to other users...

I've done V weave using pro carbon with resin infusion.... IMO the issue with pre V weave material is getting the V exactly where you want it.

I use aero 2 adhesive as recomended by easycomposites... just dont use too much of any adhesive as they will all leave some sort of residue unless they are epoxy based... and I havnt found an epoxy based one available yet Sad
