Hi

I have just started a kayak restoration project.  The initial plan was just to patch the carbon kevlar hull following the tutorial in the EC video on YouTube (simples!).  However as I started prepping the hull, sanding the damaged areas bottom of the boat and marking up the damage it became obvious I may as well just re-skin the whole hull.

Questions I have?
- Should I patch the damaged individually, or will the outer skin do this effectively on its own?
- Will the EL2 Epoxy Laminating Resin 500g SLOW be enough to do the bottom hull and re-tape the seam?
- What will give me the easiest and best finish on the hull - release film or peel ply?

Once I have done the bottom of the boat, I can then start on the decks, where the original gold glitter deck has become faded and matt, But that will start a host of more questions no doubt.

Kind regards

James

Hi James,

Do you have a picture?

Generally it is best to repair the broken areas and not add tons of extra material.  It is harder to finish and adds lots of weight.  You'll probably bet best off using a wet-out roller (aka bubble popper - roller with the ridges) and then peel ply over.

Patching Kevlar and then finishing it will be no fun.  Could you do the repairs with e-glass if the Kevlar is still intact just crunchy or cracked?
