Generally it is best to repair the broken areas and not add tons of extra material. It is harder to finish and adds lots of weight. You'll probably bet best off using a wet-out roller (aka bubble popper - roller with the ridges) and then peel ply over.
Patching Kevlar and then finishing it will be no fun. Could you do the repairs with e-glass if the Kevlar is still intact just crunchy or cracked?
