Hello,

Just a quick question. The rolled wrapped carbon fibre tubing, is there a smooth finish on it or is it kind of rippled?

Hi,

Quoted from the EC product page...

"The phrase ‘roll wrapped’ refers to the process used to manufacture these tubes. The pre-preg carbon fibre is first laid up around a mandrel in multiple layers. Once the reinforcement is in place it is spiral wrapped with heat-shrink tape (this is what gives roll-wrapped tubes their characteristic ribbed appearance) before the whole assembly is oven cured."

As explained above it does have a slight "ribbed" surface. Depending on where you are in the world? if you want to see it for real pop into your local fishing tackle shop and have a look at the Carbon Rods/Poles most are produced using the Roll Wrap technique.

Hi G,

The way to describe it would be ribbed rather than rippled. The 'steps' on the surface are simply a function of the shirnk tape that's spiral round around them during the manufacturing process. I think the photos on the website give an acurate idea of what the tubes look like. If you slide your nails over the surface you'll hear a slight 'zzzzz' sound as they go over the faint ribs.

When Warren says that you'll find this finish on fishing poles, this certainly won't always be the case. I'm not a fisherman but so far, of the poles I've seen customers bring in to ask about how to repair them, I've only ever seen carbon fibre tubes that have been manufactured by pulltrusion, they therefore have a smooth finish from the pultrusion process.

All the best, Matt

Hey lads,

First off, Kev:

I did indeed read the product description, but  "The phrase ‘roll wrapped’...(this is what gives roll-wrapped tubes their characteristic ribbed appearance)"...  but in my experience, a product may appear ribbed but be in fact have a smooth finished and vice-versa.

I would have to agree with Matt on the fishing rod. Now im no fishing expert but Ive only ever seen them in a pultrusion form and being smooth.

Thanks Matt, thats clears that up then. Also I noticed that your pultruded tubes only go up to 12mm. Is there a plan in the company to supply 14/15mm as well?

Thanks to everyone for adding their opinions and helping out.

Hi, sorry if my suggestion about the Rods/Poles was incorrect but the ones in my local shop are roll wrapped. I spoke with the shop owner today and it turns out the Rods/Poles I have seen there are made by a local chap specifically for him and not commercially available.

In pultrusion, probably not. In our experience, generally, once the required diameter is up much beyond 12mm (with exception of the aforementioned fishing poles!) the loads on the tube tend to be less unilateral and therefore it gets harder to successfully use unidirectional pultrusions and more appropriate to use roll wrapped tubes. This is why we have the 'handover' between pultrusions and roll-wrapped tubes around the 10/12mm mark.

All the best, Matt
