First off, cool car. Love those things I'd personally do both actions you mentioned. Starting with the buck in the same condition you're expecting for your finished product is the best way to set yourself up for success, plus in your case it'll be much easier to get a really good result by using a buffer/polisher since the part is convex. Tougher to use one of those things on a concave part like the mold will end up, but a sand with some 1000+ grit and then polishing of the mold surface is your last line of defense if you don't feel the polish-up of the buck gave a desired mold finish. Looking forward to seeing the end result!
