Trainee laminator in need of PTFE dibbers

Y Group: Forum Members Posts: 8, Visits: 195	I'm 3 months into my training as a laminator and I'm slowly acquiring the tools I need. I have most of the tools that I'm able to buy - scalpels, snap blades, rulers etc. I have just made myself a carbon fibre dibber for bagging, but I really need a PTFE dibber for the laying up process. However, the company I work for doesn't really use PTFE, so I'm struggling to get my hands on one. If anyone has any spare that they can give me I would be so grateful! Cheers Steve

Group: Forum Members Posts: 460, Visits: 5.2K	ive always made my own dibbers, the company that you are working for do they allow the use of PTFE dibbers as many aerospace companies don't? You can make dibbers out of plastic or composites, for the tight corners i use a steel rule with the sharp corners taken off. I would suggest you buy a small sheet of PTFE and see if you can copy one of the other lammys dibbers. I had a look at buying a sheet last night, but was unsure about what size to get. Do you think 6mm thickness would be ok? Also, how would you go about shaping it? I.e. What would you use to cut it and what would you use to make it smooth? Cheers

Cheers bandsaw to cut the shapes out and then just normal sanding tools to do the sanding and contours, I spent a couple of hours doing mine. Ask the other laminators if you can see there dibbers and ask if you can draw round them onto a template and transfer to the PTFE. Its also worthgetting some cured carbon sheet and making some from that or Tufnel.

Is there a particular grit of sand paper you'd recommend using? Cheers

Group: Forum Members Posts: 460, Visits: 5.2K	Whatever you can use to cut the rough shape, then do up from 80 grit up until it's smooth about 600. Remember to not make the edges on your bagging dibber too sharp

Group: Forum Members Posts: 237, Visits: 4.8K	got a few dinners in the draws "main" tool (the wide one) is from 6mm ptfe sheet band sawed to shape, sanded an polished The smaller one, 10mm ptfe sheet same prep My tufnel ones are mostly very specific for things like suspension etc. Lot harder to work but you get some good results Just be aware there are diffrent types of tufnel Glass an canvas based You want canvas
