Hey guys, i am the founder of nuke optics, still a small sized eyewear company. We are currently working on a project creating an eyewear system entirely made of carbon fiber composites with the following specs

1) made of CFC (carbon fiber composites)
2) 3 sunglasses and 4 eyeglasses
3) sunglasses allow prescription via rx clip
4) interchangeable and modular

And the biggest challenge to bring it down to $59 SGD or $45 USD a set. The materials itself in my research has rarely if ever been used and i can understand why in eyewear. For carbon fibre composites in eyewear you need to get the carbon fiber % vs composites right otherwise its too stiff etc. But its such a strong but expensive material. For those who wanted to see how carbon fiber composite in eyewear looks like , check the pictures. It has a very unique texture. This was made in the earlier part of our research as a prototype. We got the composition of carbon fiber WRONG, so while it was so strong .. it was basically too rigid and extremely tight. The good news is we have found a different composition that works and hoping to have a good end result.

So here are my questions
1) how many of us would go for a carbon fiber composite eyewear
2) What do you all think about the project if its worth pursing... i want to but... it just insanely expensive in a small quanity and for a small company.

I was kind of hoping for carbon weave surface. If its not for the optics, i don't really see the benefits of carbon fibre in eyewear. Yes, stronger... but I never had issues with the mechanical propertys of my glasses.

I have broken a number of frames over the years.  If the CFC can withstand the abuse, I am down for it.

I have been a fan of Ti frames, though recently I broke one of those, fatigue on the temple from wearing with a motorcycle helmet.

Bring it Nuke.

I'm with Oakmont on this one, I'm afraid.

I admire the technical skill in producing them but, without the 'look' of carbon fibre, I'm struggling to see the attraction over other materials.

Notwithstanding the mechanical properties, there does seem to be a vast choice of colours and finishes already available via more conventional materials and, I'm guessing that most peoples' first consideration would be cosmetic appeal

Coat of clear and they would be ok! I don't mind the uni/extruded appearance, to be honest I actually don't like woven carbon in apparel as it is FAR too overdone and for the most part I assume it is fake. This way the material looks more exotic than just black plastic/metal, but doesn't venture into that 'is it an imitation' territory.

I'd buy them for the right price, but yeh I wouldn't pay hundreds.

Wow, what a journey this has been. I launched this idea on kickstarter and raised close to about 45k and assumed this project would have a time line similar to previous plastics i was working on. Man i was wrong. My stress levels were through the roof throughout this project and i had a reputation that i painstakingly took to build to keep. This has been a real journey for me on a personal, artistic and business level.

Kickstarter project details
project ended Jan 2019
Promised delivery: April 2019
Actual delivery Oct 2019.

Pros
The strength is insane. I have no way to put it but, it's immediately visible just by the act of squeezing of the frames. The flex is minimal but the strength is almost 4-6 times stronger than tr-90 and tr-90 is already a mid to high end plastic depending on the grade and brand you chose.
We opted for the raw finish no coating no extra painting nothing. Straight out from the injection mould. the only thing we did was to polish any rough edges. To keep in line with the aesthetic feel.

Cons:One of the most difficult materials to work with for complex geometry and mass production.
The first think i learned about carbon fiber composite as a molding material, is that it does not work the same way as plastics such tr-90 etc. Add the complex geometry in the following design molding and essentially it turned out to be a molding and injection night mare. The molding it self took about 3 months to solve and carbon fiber composites has a high rejection rate when you go for mass production.

this is one heck of a super elite though material , expensive but insanely strong to the extent that no other comparable plastics come even close.
