If you work at Easy Composites and your ears have been burning today it’s my fault...your thixo additive seems to have added zero structure to the silicone I was using.

However, then I read the label...only for ADDITIVE cure silicone...I’ve got the condensation cure product. Is that the reason why it’s not working?

If so, then yes, I should have read the label...but a little warning when customers order these two products together (and no additive cure silicone) might be a good idea!

Hi,

Yes, that's exactly why it won't work; the product Thixotropic Additive for Addition Cure Silicone is only intended for use with addition cure silicones. Their chemistry is quite different and the additive has no effect on a condensation cure silicones unfortunately. I am sorry for any frustration this has caused.

I understand your point about a warning if one product is purchased with an incompatible product but in reality this might be quite difficult to implement. Certainly if you ordered over the phone and asked for both of these products then our staff would advise you that they do not work together but in terms of automating this process for an online purchase I'm sure you can guess that we have literally thousands of product combinations that don't work together and that coding this sort of incompatibility checker could be very complicated. I'm not trying to make excuses but we did name the product as best as we could to try to make clear that it's for addition cure silicones only Smile

Learning from your post though I have added a bit if extra information to the product page to highlight the incompatibility with condensation cure silicone.

For condensation cure silicone, you could try adding fumed silica. This does have a thixotropic effect on the silicone although it's not as impressive as the effect of the thixo additive on addition cure silicone.

Mea culpa. Years in technical service telling customers to read labels and then I do exactly the same. Physician, heal thyself!

Related; what’s the SG of the condensation cure product? If I can’t thicken it I’ll have to retain it somehow...need to know how much I need to weigh out to fill about a half litre void.

Thanks!

Also...what colour should the mixed condensation silicone be? I’ve been working with 100g quantities and the colour has been very pale grey. Stepped up to 500g and it’s a lot darker. Sneaking suspicion that my kitchen scales are not up to the task of weighing 5g accurately, as I’ve also been having some very slow sets with the smaller quantities...

Thanks!

The Exact density figures are in a range and are on the spec tab and TDS.  However mixed with hardener, it is fractionally denser than water so you would need just over half a kilo to get the half litre volume.  I would probably use the middle of the range of figures quoted then use that to get a more accurate quantity to measure out.

Describing the shade of grey is rather subjective (I would probably describe the correct shade as mid grey!) but needless to say, it should be the same shade regardless of quantity so at least one of those mixes is wrong but I have no way of saying with certainty which one!

Just realised how apt my tag is for this question!

Thanks for the help...I went with 600g in the end...some left over but I’d rather that than be short. Thanks again!
