Just to throw in a nice little tidbit of inside info in this forum -- touching on the endless discussion on how Resin infusion can compare to PRE-preg or other "Aerospace" methods

The process that BMW calls "Resin Transfer" and use for building 750 frames for the ultra high end - carbonfibre overload "HP4 RACE" version of the S1000RR bike  -- is an advanced resin infusion process -- using CNC machined moulds, and rather than "sucking in" the resin it is High pressure injected, like when doing plastic parts.

BMW says that this process is used to be able to control fibre orientation down to individual tow strands, in order to control torsional flex and optimize strength to weight ratio.

The outer layers are actually Biaxial CF cloth -- Smooooth

Is this not RTM?

Yes - HP-RTM according to BMW --  But when you see the videos of the machines doing parts for the BMW i8  - you can see that the presses do two stages, one where the moulds are not fully closed- then they close fully ..

This is actually two stage  RTM --  the moulds close to within 1- 2 mm of fully closed and a precise amount of resin is injected at low pressure, then the mould is closed and full pressure applied-  This avoids the risk of high pressure resin displacing the fibre orientation.

It is NOT a vacuum driven Resin infusion -like us amateurs use, but the end result is not very different .. apart from the more precisely controlled thicknes of the laminate - and both sides of the part can have "final finish"

The frame for the bike is not made as one part, it is way to complicated for that, it is made in multiple parts, with moulded in aluminium supports and bonded together ..

We have a hp-rtm press at work. 3500 tonnes which we have made a few various parts for jlr and for aerospace.
I work on the tooling of them and the cavity pressure is crazy when you are injecting resin at 1200psi .

Really I think this is as different to vacuum resin infusion as pre-preg is. Totally different resins, totally different tooling, totally different set of associated problems, totally different process. End of the day, the parts might not be that different from a resin infused part, but they will just be that nth degree better, which is why high end companies use it.
