Thanks James, glad you like them

Maybe it could be a good test to try it with just one layer of profinish backed with 2 layers of "regular" carbonfiber?

Hi all,

Thanks for the responses, I am using 3 x layers of pro finish - I wonder if this could be a factor? though it shouldn't be?!

I'm making small parts here and *non*pro-finish is really messy to work with on smaller parts !

Love watching your videos by the way Matthieu!

With pro-finish I find the strands are held tighter and with regular cloth I find it squashes flatter.  Sorry for the odd description but its the only way I can describe it.  It's as if the binder holds the bundles of fibres tighter.  I've found it does occasionally leave slight gaps between bundles and gives a little unevenness on the strand.  This has only really been an issue for me when it's not backed by a second layer of carbon.  I've just accepted it as one of the costs of it's performance.  I certainly wouldn't not use it.

If you want to try an alternative you could go old school and use hair spray.  I've never tried it but carefully rolling out cloth and giving it a blast of hairspray is supposed to support the weave in a similar way.  I'm not sure if it affects the resin at all or has any other effects on the laminate.

maybe it's just me but I like the alignment/looks of the carbonfiber in the first image (profinish if I'm correct) more than the second picture...
Never hard problems with pro-finish...

Is it possible you are only using one layer?

I have only used the 'Pro Finish' one or twice and never really noticed any issues with binding crystals getting dragged across the stands, the only extra thing that I generally do is gently heat up the mould and resin to about 25/30c before doing an infusion as my workshop is generally pretty chilly, this just makes sure that everything is at a nice even temperature maybe this helps the 'Pro Finish' binder blend better with the resin infusion ? not sure just an idea ...

Hi Warren, usually the side with the binder on is NOT touching the mould face. but I have tried it the other way up as well and getting the same finish? I have 0 air bubbles so nothing to do with vacuum.

Which way did you put the cloth down? most people have the side with the resin binder away from the mould face to minimise any possibility of any visual problems with the binder.

Hi Guys,

I must say I'm taking full advantage of the benefits to "pro finish" - much less mess and fraying which is ideal.

Just wondered, has anyone been experiencing some defect in the finish? Its almost as if the crystals of resin are being dragged by the resin flow and you can see it in the finished part. Also, does anyone use a specific side as I noticed that one side has the larger resin crystals/blobs on it! I have tried putting it face up and face down either side with same result. Not a complaint as it still looks OK.

Here is the "pro finish" - you can see in the weave what I mean. I'm talking about the marks along the strands inline with the fibres, NOT the white lines you can see - those are reflections of my lamp (also the white moon you see is just reflection of my lamp):

And here is the finish with normal cloth:

Regards,

James
