New to composites, Here is my first attempt at laminating.

Have quite a lot of items i want to laminate inside my car so began with the Ignition Barrel cover.

I'll let the pictures do the talking.

1 note i will add is 3 coats in there was water contamination on a wet coat and it ruined that coat. So yes i have applied quite a thick layer of resin over the piece.

Very nice.
What product did you use, and did you clear coated the part, or just buffed it?

Hey Meir

Thanks very much !

I used EL2 Laminating Epoxy with the AT30 Fast Hardener. No clear coat just let it fully cure for a couple of days after the final coat and used some polish and wax and it came up quite nicely Smile
I have quite a lot of different polishes and waxes for my car so i can use different ones each time to see what different results i get.

Nice work. I know we have several customers skinning with the EL2 Epoxy Laminating Resin (include Matt Libeert who's done some very nice work) but we would always suggest our XCR Epoxy Coating Resin for use when skinning parts with carbon fibre. The advantages to the XCR are much improved UV stability, much improved air release (it effectively pushes out trapped air during the early stage of the cure) as well as a faster cure (so you can build up layers more quickly) and it can be polished to a high gloss without the need for a lacquer. What you've achieved with the EL2 is impressive, particularly for a first attempt, but if you're enjoying the process and thinking of doing more then I can wholeheartedly recommend you have a go with the XCR coating resin. We're filming a new video to go with our XCR Carbon Fibre Skinning Starter Kit this week which is VERY overdue! I hope you'll like it.

All the best, Matt

I have just ordered some of the 1kg of XCR to see how it compares Smile

Very kind words Matt thank you.

Ill be sure to watch it as soon as you upload it !

I have a list of parts i'm doing for myself and a list of items i'm making for my friends and people interested in getting away from fake carbon vinyl wrap so ill be sure to post them too.

Just returning onshore today so ill post up photos of my glovebox cover that i done with EL2 aswell, Have a look and see what you think.

Soon i'll need to start infusion as i need completely new body panel parts for the car, Would love to try Pre-Preg but i cannot find anyone or a company that would let me use their autoclave or just an oven. Maybe when i have my own workshop i can purchase one.

Looks good always nice to see the process in a series of images.

I might have to get some EL2 Epoxy Laminating Resin for filling those awkward voids/bridging in that takes ages to build up layers in normal epoxy resin.

Thanks Davro !

in the 6th picture you can see where i sanded it down after its 2nd coat, Still some low spots but looked alright, the 7th picture where you can see all the low spots and what looks like gouges is after my father kinda let some water on it while 2hrs into a cure ha
But the EL2 filled the low spots well and i was happy that i didn't need to scrap the part.

Looking forward to using the XCR, Should arrive Wednesday so i can start 1 item before i fly out for holidays on thursday ha
