Sure you can, you will just want to use PVA as the release agent. Styrene will attack vinyl, so you need a physical barrier between the gelcoat and the vinyl surface.

Can't get a Preval sprayer or something cheap like that? Hell, I even think a misting bottle would work better than brushing it.

I haven't tried the misting bottle. It wouldn't atomise the PVA, so I don't think it would be possible to get a very good finish. But I think the important thing would be to protect the plug and the mould surface, which requires a decent coating of PVA, something I never managed to achieve by brushing or wiping. You can always rub the mould surface back and polish it up, but repairing an alligatored mould and binning a plug is a lot worse...

It is for a panel where the paint isn't so good so was going to wrap it, but I might strip it back and get the part powder coated I'm guessing release agent will be ok on a powder coated part?

Just wondered how this turned out in the end? Did the PVA release ok from the vinyl wrapped panel?
