I would like to put some threaded inserts into my finished carbon fibre piece, bonded like you guys did with the fittings on the car bonnet instructional video project. I have see Warren mention 'off the shelf' inserts that have the perforated or scored load plate on them for better bonding but can't find a source of these off the shelf inserts.

Could you direct me to a supplier of this time of insert please and also recommend which type of structural bonding adhesive and supplier for that too please? I only want short m5 or m6 threads so not massive torque involved in the bolts for the finished product. Thanks! 😉

Thanks guys - I need some small M5 x 5mm female sighted fasteners and it looks like I can only get boxes of 100, when I need 12. Maybe I need to think about making them myself or even trying to bond something more basic to suit?

How much load will be on those M5 inserts?

You may well be able to get away with drilling and tapping some small pieces of Aluminium/stainless-steel "sheet metal"  like 2- 3 mm in thickness ..

I have made a few like that.. on some of them i did not even drill and tap them before bonding them in .. they were placed in the "stack" at roughly the right places.  Then the holes were marked and drilled and tapped after the parts had cured, using the other part as a precise "template" for the holes ..

I have used what is called T nuts. These are usually meant for timber furniture and you can see they have these 4 spikes sticking up which would normally key into the wood.

For composites I glue them to the back face of a part and then laminate over the back of the spikes pushing the spikes through the laminate too.

Yeah .. the "T-Nuts" also work well if you flatten down the "spikes" and score the flat side heavily with a file or dremel cutter - Then just bond them directly on a peel-ply surface or sanded down ..

A laminated on patch of CF with a hole on top makes it even stronger and nicer looking ..
