I've bought the uni-mould kit (and resin infusion kit) from EC as I'm wanting to make a mould of a racing car nose cone.  There are a few features that make it a little more complicated so I'm a little unsure.

I wondered whether to make split lines down the lower 'fins' that pop down below the nose as that's the main bit of concern.

Thanks for any advice you can give me, I really appreciate it.

My thoughts are to have one piece as the very front of the nose coming back behind the fins and then the rest as two further pieces

Are there any split lines visible in the original part?
It looks like you have some undercuts at the root end of the nose, I would see what it's like once you extend the surfaces to make the tool.

Unfortunately I can't see any, I had a good look.

Sorry, I don't quite follow.  What do you mean by 'extend the surfaces to make the tool'?  Are you talking about flanges on the mould?

Yep the flanges. You will need a good 2-3 inches.

I'm Andrew, I suspect you're referring to Andy Laurence.  We share the car

I guess you mean to extend the flanges so I can make a further mould of the end?

yeah ive been speaking to andy on email, still need to get along to a bristol mc club meet.
But with regards to the mould, you will always make your tool bigger especially with going down the infusion route, I see you have a return flange I presume so it can attach to the front bulkhead. I think you are on the right lines with a split down the middle, Im not sure how the wing pylons would release as i cant tell the undercut from the photos. But a simple return flange on the rear mounting should be easy enough to add.
How does it attach to the car? Is it zsus fasteners?

Ah!  I've just put two and two together and worked out who you are.

I understand about the flanges for infusion.  It was the return flanges that I was concerned about.  I'm trying to figure out whether they form an undercut.  They might not but I can't be bothered to go out to the workshop again and check Smile

We've got a lot of work ahead of us with the car.  Andy is working on the design of the floor and then we'll be looking to make that from carbon, kevlar and core material.
