Hey,

The winters setting in now and I'm thinking of having a go at building a snowboard! I realise that I'm not gonna build one as good as commercial ones but it'd like somthing to mess about on when there's snow at home, I've done a fair bit of boarding but have always borrowed mates gear. does anybody know where I should start... I can make a wood core no problems but how many layers of cloth should I use? anyone got any idea of orientation? I'm gonna order the edging and P-tex for the base. any help on this one would be ace. Or am I best leaving it well alone?!!!

Cheers M

Need to borrow someones board first to make a mold. Eh, careful with the binding mounts, if they pop out you will be doing  a split or worse..

Well you're brave! There have been one or two "how it's made" episodes showing how snowboards and skis are made, you will probably find these on YouTube.
Also search through the main board manufacturers websites, they often have a technical section that shows the different layers of their boards, the geometry, flex patterns, side cut, camber, edge profile, etc.

I'd say, without advanced skills and composites knowledge, along with the required tools and press, you would be better off just buying one. There are some reasonably priced boards out there if budget is tight. Even the pricier ones will come cheaper than building your own.

I built a foam core and glass skimboard once, it took me many many hours and was hard work and pretty complicated, similar to building a surfboard. It came out very well but ended up costing more than a pro model from victoria skimboards. Anyways I did it for the challenge and fun of it.

What I'm saying is, it was a complex endeavor but no where near as complex as a snowboard would be.

heres a vid anyways...

Like Baja said, if you are doing it to have a "cheaper" board you don't have to do it...If you have some budget and just want to have some fun making one you can give it a go...
Keep in mind that snowboarding companies have done a lot of research and developement through the years and have improved every little mistake they've made in previous models.
I'm sure that while making the snowboard and while using it you will notice a lot of points of improvements...mostly you will only be happy after the 4th - 5th model you've made after taking out all the little
errors in previous models Smile but like I said it can be a cool project to keep you busy and learn a lot out of it.

Here's an extra video of some guys I follow on youtube

Doing some really cool experimental stuff with snowboards.
Might be interesting as well for the guys not interested in snowboards but more about experimental stuff with composites and manufacturing.
Like the title says they upload a new video 'every third thursday of the month'
