Hi,

Hoping I could ask from suggestions from everyone.

I'm about to start creating a f/g parcelshelf for the car and need to take a mould of the adapted current one.  The issue that I have is that the shelf is made from carpet! not the best material to paint gellcoat onto and expect it to release easily.

Friends have suggested shaving it right down and painting it, waxing it, cling film - I'm umming on the idea of trying to vacuum wrap it as best as possible with the release sheet the guys use in the videos for putting between the f/g / carbon and the vacuum bag.  Any fold marks can be cleaned up post production using body filler.

As the shelf will be either painted, vinyled or carpeted (probably painted) I don't mind a bit of filler on the final product.

What does everyone think? any ideas?

Cheers

Hello Rocker,
I would suggest building a new plug from scratch using your current shelf as a guide for measurements shape etc... This way may save you a lot more hassle and time and the plug should be stronger than an original shelf and result in a better mould construction!  As quoted by yourself  the 7p rule....😉
Kind Regards

Good response from FK!

Wrapping in cling film is an option but too much extra work required on the mould or final part will be more time consuming than making a reasonable new plug. I would consider tracing and cutting the 2d profile from a board of sorts and then building any 3D shapes using foam (or other timber board) that can be shaped to your desire (perhaps post a pic of the parcel shelf and get some input from the guys here).

Starting from scratch isn't necessary if the shelf is already the shape you want. I agree that covering the shelf in film leads to too much finishing work yo use as a mould, however it will provide a release. So I would suggest skipping the gelcoat for now and just building a fibreglass plug, then filling that smooth and giving it a coat of paint before moulding off that. Just don't make it so thick that it no longer fits the cavity!

Of course if you do want to change the shape at all, the the foam/board method using 2D profiles to build the shape is the way to go.

Post a picture of your shelf, it sounds like a flat shape so it should make for an easy male or female mould made from cheap board?
