I have a 2010 450 exc-f that I was planning on making all CF myself and a 2015 350 SXF that I use to race.

What year is your bike?

Hi there.
I'm not having much luck with the molds for my bike. Has tabs, sunken bolts holes etc. Would I be better off with veri preg and an old electric oven?
Even then I'll have oven size issues? Unless I lay up and find someone with an autoclave?
Thanks

No worries.

I picked up some glass, epoxy gel coat, sheet wax, fibre glass and modelling putty the other day to get started on a mould for my clutch cover. I've just got to get to the garage and do it now. If you're in Europe look at the EC site for sheet wax - prices seem good compared to what we have here.

Hi. Apologies. I mean case cover. Over this neck of the woods is no where near F1 technologies.
Thanks for the info

When you say engine casings do you mean covers of the actual casing or remaking a casing out of CF rather than the Magnesium (obviously limitations in doing that for the entire motor Wink )?

To do covers you would use sheet wax to add the desired thickness to the casing and then take your mould off that. So if you want a 3mm thick part you use 3mm thick sheet wax.

Hi there,
Thanks for the reply.
Just got polyester gel coat for my mold making. You say epoxy tooling gel to be good? Think I'll have a go with the polyester then the epoxy. Ideally want to make the molds quick and cheap as possible (dont we all) and go from there.

As for infusion I think that's the way I'll need to go as I can get oven cured pre preg but it costs more than regular pre preg. Either way need to get some experience and then a vacum pump etc.

Any ideas for engine casings as I've got molds but the mold will be the same size as the case itself?

Thanks again

Hi jay,

give it a go. You need to make the panel in cf then glue any tabs on the rear using anything you can to fit.

I'm doing a similar thing to you and am a little further down the road so should be able to answer a few of your questions.

Ive found the green epoxy tooling gel fairly easy to use as it doesn't smell like the uni mould, that said the uni can be left between each stage so this can be useful if time is tight.

I'd advise putting edges on the moulds as you will want to infuse once you start, its kind of addictive.

I have a couple Blink of models, but neither is the same age as the 530. I'm also across one of the ponds from you I presume. Thanks for the offer though.

Sounds like a nice project. First I'll be doing clutch and ignition covers, will look at the rest later.

Good luck with your project, I'm interested to see how you go.

Hi,
Thanks for getting in touch.
I have a KTM 530 EXC-R that's in supermoto form. Will be turbocharged later this year for burning round on the tracks... In a vain attempt to whip my mate on his gixxer.

Not sure what year or model you have but going to make molds for most of the bike so might be able to help you with molds if required?
CF and Kevlar might be your solution.

Mine is just to look good.
