Hi guy

Bought some fibre 2/2 twill 3k,  and the el2 slow epoxy,  I will be using glass to make the sheet on, I would like the size to be 400mm x 300mm

So how many sheets for 2mm thick,   And would I need to cure this with heat, if so I have a 500 heat platen,

Thanks guys for any advice,    Kev,   P.s these are for cutting parts on cnc cutter,

You are looking at roughly 4 layers of 200gsm cloth per mm of thickness depending how well you consolidate the layers and how resin rich it is.

EL2 can be cured at room temperature no problem then finished off with a post cure, or cured at elevated temperature to start with.

Nothing to it  .... Cool

2 mm will be around 8 layers ...

If you do NOT have vaccum equipment:

-----------

If you want to make sure that you get a sheet 2 mm thick, use some 2 mm spacers and TWO glass plates (thick ones!! OR epoxied to a stronger backing plate, like plywood )

Make sure to release treat both plates ..

Wet lay on one plate, a bit rich on resin, all 8 layers .. be very careful not to distort the first and last layer.

Carefully roller out as much air as you can, then leave the "stack" for maybe 30 mins -- that lets a lot of the air-bubbles go to the top..

2 mm spacers all around the edge.. then the other glass plate on top-- let it squeeze out the excess resin..

You can speed up the curing time with heat, but if your room is more than 20 deg. C. then just leave it for 24 hours..

--------------------

If you HAVE vacuum gear (pump, gum tape, bag-film ...) Then you have choices to make... Rolleyes

You can leave the edge of the glass plate (thick glass, or thin glass epoxied to a strong backing plate) free of release (wax or chemical release, like EC Easy Lease) and Gum tape the edge.
Then you can do the wet lay and put peel-ply, perforated release-film and breather on top of the "stack" The breather will absorb the excess resin through the holes in the perforated film, giving a better resin to fibre ratio.
The peelply makes it easy to clear-coat the "rough" side of the carbon sheet.  If you do it right, and remember to place the vacuum connector outside the "usable" area of the CF-sheet, the "rough side will be almost as nice at the "glass-plate side, when properly clear-coated.

Or you can do as above, and use two glass plates and envelope bag the whole lot .. BUT WITHOUT THE SPACERS! that will bend the centre of the plates towards eachother ant make the CF-sheet thinner in the middle.

Using vacuum it will be better to experiment with the number of layers to get to the 2 mm..

Good luck..

Also for working with glass you will need a chemical release agent such as Easy-Lease Chemical Release Agent as mould release wax generally won't stick.  As soon as you try and polish the wax smooth it comes straight off.  PVA again also doesn't stick well and becomes a nightmare of chasing the fisheyes!

If you are not worried about super high gloss or a perfect cosmetic finish then polypropelene sheet is great as epoxy won't stick to it and all you have to do to release the carbon is flex the sheet slightly. To be fair, when brand new the polypropelene sheet has a perfect surface anyway with very high gloss. However it quickly picks up scratches and dulls compared to glass.

TR-108 release wax works well on glass because you buff it off while it's still wet. PVA is a nightmare though!

Yeah... The wax I have used on glass is a spray type too.. Some German stuff... can't remember the name..

Now I only use Easy-lease Smile
