Sorry if this is covered elsewhere, I couldn't find it.

I have made a table with parquet floor tiles laid onto plywood, and would like to shutter the edges and pour some kind of epoxy on to make it completely smooth. What would be the best product? and are there any pitfalls I should be aware of?

Many Thanks

Will

The best product IMHO is Wessex Resins "Permakote"    http://www.wessex-resins.com/products/wra-permakote
EC have not yet perfected their own "table top surface coat"

Cheers and good luck!

We don’t have anything that’s quite right in our rangeat the moment which is why we’ve been working on a product for this exactapplication, a clear, UV stable, self-levelling encapsulation and flood-coatingresin for bar tops, penny floors and similar. It’s actually a really complexsubject and not just the ‘pour and cure’ using a standard resin system that you might hope.

We’re hopeful that development of the new resinis nearing completion as we have been working on it for 18 months, but we don’thave any stock yet, nor packaging, a name or a product listing! We’ve trialledall of the market leaders including products imported from the USA and all hadissues that meant that the finish wasn’t perfect; we’ve had custom resinsblended to our own requirements and the cycle is getting close.

In the meantime however there really isn’t anything that’s anywhere near as goodthat I could suggest you use.

Dravis you are right there aresome resins that kind of work ok for it but all have some compromises. We won'tsell something as a table top resin unless it "does what it says on thetin".  Too many of the resins out there simply are not in our opiniongood enough to give the stunning finish many of our customers would want fromsuch a product.

As a result we are trying to ensure we have the right product before we releaseit. We literally have dozens and dozens of test samples (borrowing all ourcopper change!!) using differing resins and differing techniques to see if wecan get a good result. Although we are getting close to finding a good resin,so far none are quite there yet.  It's turned out to be a much morecomplicated subject than we originally thought!

Warren .. You are quite right.. I'm not saying that the "Permakote" is perfect, it is not outdoors UV stable over longer time, it is not absolutely "water clear" and the surface is not mirror perfect, it just happens to be the best product I've used so far.

Seems to me that getting a solvent free Epoxy-based product that has ALL the wanted characteristics is close to impossible.  UV stabilization tends to give Epoxy a yellow tint. Enhancing the viscosity/thixotropic effect tends to make Epoxies a bit cloudy or "unclear"  so I can well imagine the amount of research that will have to go in to getting "the right, if not perfect" product.
