Hi,

I'd like to construct an exhaust box from carbon fibre, around 40cm x 30cm x 20cm. The exhaust gases are around 600'C. What is the temperature capabilities of carbon fibre sheet & edging, and is there a high temperature means of bonding to construct a box from these materials?

Cheers, Mark.

Hi Mark,

Well, when you say the exhaust gasses are 600'C is that the temperature they're going to be when they hit the box and is the box unbaffled and the carbon in direct contact with these gases? - If it is then you're really going to be pushing it to find any composite materials that you can use in this way. OurVery High Temperature Epoxy Resin really is an unusually high temperature epoxy and it's only rated to around 180'C (although we've tested it just past 200'C). The carbon itself is OK up to about 800'C so that's not your problem but I really don't know of any normal resin systems that could stand 600'C.

Carbon fibre exhaust cans are very common but they're always a carbon sleeve around wadding/baffling which is around a metal inner sleeve; they get got of course but it's more like 150-190'C and so it's within the range that a high temp epoxy can handle.

Best regards, Matt

Matt,
Would exhaust tips out of carbon be feasible? Instead of factory chrome (er, stainless) it should handle that temp, right?

Hi Mike,

Exhaust tips are perfectly feasable, they're well within the temperature of our high temp epoxy.

All the best, Matt
