Yes ... Epoxy resin and very fine glass weave is the way to go, forget "going original" Cellulose Nitrate dope and canvas is very difficult to get right, AND both a breathing and extreme flammability hazard.
Clean the wood surface very gently, and sand it smooth, again gently, then apply a thin layer of epoxy resin, and let it cure to a tack, then lay up with thin glass weave (under 100 gsm) and coat with a few layers of epoxy. Then you can sand the surface nice and smooth, and paint the hull with a good quality boat varnish of the right colour
