Hi all,

I have a few kayaks to build over the coming weeks using glass and polyester resin.  I have build before inside but due to moving house since last building, I will be forced to either rent somewhere, or build outside.

The question is, does building using polyester resin outside affect the finished product as some people have told me that the styrene disappears too quickly meaning the cross linking doesn't happen properly?  I have also heard that some larger boat manufacturers build outside when they can.

Layup plan is Gelcoat -> 1x 450gsqm CSM (2 in high stress places for added strength) -> 300gsqm woven rovings all polyester resins.  This is the standard layup for the kayaks and works well.

Can anyone help clear this up for me?

I often mould outside and find it works just fine.  I'd have no issues doing it at all.

1x450g layer and 1 x 300g layer seems a bit thin.  What sort of boat is this?  The reason I ask is that I've paddled boats that have been made of 6 layers of 450g for robustness.
