You can read and watch videos until your blue in the face (that's what I do too) but it's not until you give it a go that you will even know what questions to ask. Unfortunately that means making mistakes too. I decided to make some car parts last year and played around with fibreglass, I did it wrong at least 4 times before I got an acceptable mould made and managed to take a part from it. Even then the part wasn't great so I wrapped it in carbon and now it looks pretty good, even though I made more mistakes wrapping it.
Until you start using this stuff you won't fully understand how it reacts and what you can and can't do. In the beginning it is expensive too, I have probably spent close to £300 making a £30 part but I have learnt a lot.

Give it a go but don't take shortcuts if you want a good result.

I actually decided to do it without a mould first, simply due to being on a budget!

I have seen a few videos now and constantly reading about it! But yeah I was hoping just to make a copy of a part by skinning a part and reinforcing it from the back or inside.

Mould materials and kit are at least another 30, I have 1sqm of 2/2 twill 3k CF, and looking to spend another 25 on a kg of resin and PVA.

Any advice is appreciated !

before starting with composites you should do a lot of reading, and watch videos before you start.
To make a mould you will need a gelcoat, not epoxy resin. Epoxy resin is used for making parts.
When making a mould you put you gelcoat first, the laminating resin (fast should be good for laminating)) and you can also
use that resin for skinning then

Hi,

About to put an order in of 1kg of epoxy and 1 litre of PVA release, never done carbon fiber before but plan to make some male moulds of some car parts.

The resin option is slow or fast, i'm not too fussed about waiting, but for a newbie anyone suggest which one?

Also, I plan to skin and layer up around a part, should I buy some reinforcing materials to put on the back to strengthen it? Could someone please explain this a bit more please?

Thanks
