I was asked to take over a contract from another company who have had a few issues with making these covers... I have made two so far and have 5 more to make.. The problem was a mould which for some reason had stress cracks and I was not told about this problem I only found out through another company who were asked to do this job. So after 2 I got the customer to invest in a new mould.
Here are my first attempts..
Made from pre-preg with the second one being made with a new pre-preg that was not available yet. I had a sample from the supplier from the original development roll... It works perfectly out of autoclave... I will let you know more when it has been launched fully and has officially been put on their website...
This is from the original mould which had to be replaced. It has the stress cracks and ripples in there so this is not perfect.. As you can see the flange is still on there and this is out of the mould with no post work done or polishing.
I sent one of the two too a supplier who coated one and tinted it red to show some options for the covers...
Here is the new mould.Hopefully the new parts will look amazing and the customer will finally be happy..

New mould looks great! To be honest, these days I almost enjoy creating a perfect mould as much as I enjoy turning out a perfect final part. Nothing gives the same satisfaction as popping out that plug and finding that mirror underneath
Out of interest, what were the flanges made out of to create this mould? I'm guessing something solid, aluminium or acrylic?

It was made from the original mould so the flanges were already on the master pulled from that mould. The plug was sprayed with Durabuild then polished back to remove the high points then the mould was polished up to get the final finish. The original mould was done elsewhere and not that good to be honest.. It was quite glossy but full of stress cracks and so I had been told by the customer he only had 5 parts from that mould so it had less than 10 pulls when you allow for a test part and possibly one or two which were not good enough to send out as the mould had been used for infusion previously and possibly wet lay....
I am making parts this week so as soon as I have one completed I will put up a few better photos.

Not bad finish for an out of autoclave pre-preg....
