Group: Forum Members Posts: 242, Visits: 1.2K	All of the Polyester resins will work and you will surely need to put some gelcoat on the surface due to its thixotropic nature to stop it from running.. Putting a layer of gelcoat over a surface like a wrap is done too... I dont think using a gelcoat for an overlay is a problem.. Moulded or none moulded the gel coat is just a thicker version of a resin and if it is a good gel coat it will have good clarity too... Fine to sand back the surface for a good finish and then to polish... I did some mirror covers that I wrapped with carbon and I used a couple of layers of normal laminating resin then several coats of normal gelcoat this gave a really good part and was very glossy too.....

As you may have gathered I am currently attempting to wrap various car parts but I'd love to find something relatively simple to do in CF which I can show my father in law to prove how awesome CF parts can be. I just have EC pro finish 2x2 twill and some of their regular 2x2 twill cloth. I may try creating a mould of a dinner plate and reproduce it in Cf using resin infusion because I would really like the thrill of watching the resin flow across during the infusion process. I'm not sure what else would be a good starter piece, I tried a coaster back in 2010 but it was small and now I'd like to try something larger.

Group: Forum Members Posts: 243, Visits: 1K	The first one I used was Hexcel M49. 200g, 45% resin, medium temp. The cosmetics of it are top notch, probably the most cosmetic I've seen. No gaps between tows, and the thread is very square. However, it didn't perform. Ill be getting another sample soon to give it another shot. The second one is an Italian product. 204g, 42% resin, medium temp. Pretty good stuff, but its not as good as VTF, you can see the tows dip and rise. Cheap though, £30 a metre. No, not single sided. The only single sided prepregs you will find are VTF, Amber's 525 and Easy-Preg.

I have never heard of polyester that was UV resistant. I know boat people use it as long as they cover it with paint to protect it from UV destruction. Polyester gelcoat finishes turn to chalk if left in the sun without protection. Epoxy does as well. Unless I am missing something this doesn't right. Also you shouldn't be using polyester resin with carbon fiber in the first place as the laminate will be much weaker than with epoxy which is what carbon calls for. I think some of the experts at EZ Composites need to chime in and clear this up before someone makes some costly mistakes. Fred
