Hi, just bought your gelcoat spraying gun. Im planning on using it with Axson GC1 050 + GC10 epoxy gelcoat which has rather high viscosity. The standard nozzle size didn't work at all. What size would you recommend me? How big can I drill the standard nozzle?

Don't want to come across as a **** for linking to a competitor (they are a whole quid more expensive anyway!)

However, they do tell you which nozzle is recommended for what:

Great, thanks. Do you sell the nozzles as well? I didn't find them at your webshop.

Hi,

We only stock the 6mm nozzle at present as we have found that to be the best nozzle for the range of products we sell.

Obviously the resin you have isnt one of ours so we havent had the problem of needing bigger nozzles before - and hence don't stock them.

However if the demand for different range nozzles is there, and we can provide them at a competitive price then we may well start supplying them in the future.

You may struggle to spray the resin at all without thinning it down as the biggest nozzle the manufacturer seems to supply is 7.1mm which may still be too big.  Thinning it down may be the best option although best to look on the product data sheet to see if it can be done.

I would just like to add to what Warren said about thinning it down. Make sure the resin is warmed to room temperature or its not going to come out of the gun. I know because I have made the mistake before.

Hope this helps.

In the end I thinned the gelcoat with 10% of epoxy resin and drilled the nozzle to 5.5mm. It seemed to improve a bit but it seemed still be too thick to spray evenly.

If I would buy epoxy gelcoat from easycomposites, can you give me instructions on best practice to spray the epoxy tooling gelcoat you are selling? Does it need thinning as well?

Sounds like you've got a gelcoat made for brush application. Gel coats made for spraying have a lower viscousity and will not need thinning.

Also, you thinned the gelcoat with 10% of the resin? I will be surprised if this mix hardens.

Sorry, i wasnt clear enough with the post. Thinned resin had it's own hardener and was mixed prior to mixing it with gelcoat.
