+xAre you on about comingled materials? As they have been around for a long time and as others have suggested there's materials like srpp self reinforced polypropylene I would have a look at the fibretec website as Bob has created a series of thermoplastic prepregs,, although I've not had the chance to try them yet? may i know what is this fibertec website where i can get access to Bob's thermoplastic prepregs?

I'm with Lester, thermoplastic fibres have been around and used in composites for a long time, there are lots of companies producing composite panels with Dyneema and Innegra as well as hybrid composites consisting of those fibres woven together with other reinforcements like carbon and fibreglass.
If you are looking for suggestions, Innegra is probably going to be the easiest thermoplastic fibre to source, and you can get it in a whole bunch of different configurations. And for your matrix, epoxy is generally the highest performing thermoset resin for most applications. If you are looking for impact strength, you might also consider a phenolic. Vinyl ester might be ok, but is generally a lower performing resin than epoxy. Polyester would be a poor choice.
Resin infusion is probably going to be your best production method, given its versatility and high performance.

+x+x+x+xHi guys. I am currently doing a research on the use of thermoplastic fibers as reinforcement, which is a relatively new idea. Fiber reinforced polymer (either thermoset or thermoplastics) composites can be tailored to meet different requirements and applications by customizing. Thermoplastics generally offer better impact resistance compared to thermosets. My studies will be to test the properties of a composite composed of polymer matrix and thermoplastic fabric reinforcement. Usually, for thermoplastic composites, the thermoplastic component comes from the matrix or resin, whereas the fiber can be carbon. But i am trying to explore the use of thermoplastic fiber as reinforcement instead. Is there any recommendation for me to start? is there any thermoplastic fiber that i can consider to use in my composite? in this composite, what kind of matrix (thermoplastic or thermoset) will be best for my composite. Dynema and Innegra are both thermoplastic fibres which are used with thermoset resins, and self reinforced PE and PP are widely used in the industry. What exactly is the research you are planning on doing? What do you try to achieve or optimize? I am exploring the use of thermoplastic fibers as reinforcement, which is relatively a new idea and being explored extensively. I am doing an impact and hardness studies on thermoplastic reinforced composites. The composite will compose of polymer matrix and thermoplastic fabric reinforcement. The impact resistance, hardness and other physical properties will be evaluated. The effect of the thermoplastic fiber reinforcement on these properties will be investigated. Since the use of thermoplastic fibers as reinforcement is a relatively new idea, i am seeking for advice and recommendation on what material to use for my fiber as well as my matrix respectively. And what type of process/method do i go about to fabricate the thermoplastic reinforced composite laminates? Maybe I'm just misunderstanding your goals but i do not think thermoplastic fibres are a novel idea. As said they are widely used in the industry, even tho usually for more niche applications. Furthermore I do not understand how you plan to find advice on processing of such materials by asking on an internet forum if the materials you describe aren't used yet as you claim. I read a few patents and worked with different thermoplastic fibres and matrix materials and I am happy to help. But i am afraid you need to ask more specific questions if you want to get good answers. cheers! Thank you for your reply. Fiber reinforced polymer (either thermoset or thermoplastics) composites can be tailored to meet different requirements and applications by customizing. Thermoplastics generally offer better impact resistance compared to thermosets. Use of thermoplastic fibres as reinforcement is relatively a new idea and being explored extensively. In my research, a composite composed of polymer matrix and thermoplastic fabric reinforcement will be studied. The impact resistance, hardness and other physical properties will be evaluated. The effect of the thermoplastic fiber reinforcement on these properties will be investigated. So first, i will have to fabricate the thermoplastic reinforced composite laminate. Composites are usually made of two components, a fiber and matrix. In this research, i will have to use a type of thermoplastic fabric, which will then be embedded in the matrix to create the composite laminate. I am seeking advice/recommendation on what thermoplastic fabric i can use, together with a certain polymer matrix to fabricate the composite laminate.Maybe you could recommend me an existing thermoplastic fabric that i can use? Or if possible, a recommended combination of a specific thermoplastic fabric and a specific polymer matrix that will go well. On overall, i am just exploring and fabricating a number of composite laminates with different thermoplastic fabric, and comparing their impact and hardness values to determine the effect of thermoplastic fiber reinforcement. I hope that clarifies.
