Hello,
I am working at theatrical workshops Vozrozhdenie in St.Petersburg.
We are looking for glass fiber resin, which can be used for coating of foam (polysterene) figures (props and sets). The resin is required to fix the carved patterns on the foam and add stiffness to them.
The resin should be fire retardant but not dangerous for health at the same time.

Would appreciate any help, advice or recommendation.

Best regards,
Tatyana

Hi Tatyana,

I'm not sure if this is what you are after, but there are products that seal EPS foam and protect it from the styrene in polyester or vinyl-ester resin.  Once this is applied, you can laminate with a standard open-molding FR resin.  Most resin manufacturers will have a bunch of fire retardant resins to choose from depending on your application.

StyroSafe primer and PolyProtect B12R are two of these products that can be brushed onto EPS and will then allow styrene-containing resins to work without melting the foam.  There are probably other similar products too but I don't know about them.

Epoxy is always an option too - but it is harder to open-mold with epoxy and it is more expensive - and probably less healthy!
