I sanded my carbon fiber lip down with some a 80 grit and I'm on my second coat of epoxy after applying it a to a previous tacky coat and I still see the scratches and the road "rash" mini chips.

Is it going to turn invisible and sit into it properly once it cures fully or did I F something up in the prep phase or it's just the carbon weave that is scratched? I'm about to do a third tacky coat now and let it cure and level it with some 180 grit then probably do 2 other coats.

You would need to sand through the chips.  The cracks you need to be careful not to sand through the carbon pattern - if you remove the pattern, the area will look black under the resin rather than show the weave. 

Hey I'm in a learning phase so I figured why not. I went over an area that had a white blemish like that and I think I sanded through the carbon? It is white and light shines through it but still feels like the epoxy around. 

Could you confirm what happened here? I'm in a learning phase so I don't mind and it's a good way for me to learn.

Based from what I know now, I think that is just a layer of fiberglass that is sitting under the carbon?



So with that in mind, all the other white knicks we see is most likely impacts that tore off the carbon?

     Yeh they won't disappear now unfortunately... They don't look like scratches though, they look like cracks. Scratches in the carbon will appear black and will only be visible on very close inspection...

             Ah shoot ok. I tried to look again it is hard to say. But then would all the other road rash small dots be small dot cracks or?

                 Not necessarily cracks, but damaged resin yeh. If it shows up as white or yellowish, anything but black, then it is in the resin.

     If you sanded it enough it would, but you may not have removed enough material. How much did you sand it?

             Hard to say how much. I went at it with some 80 for some time but I didn't really pay attention to those areas. I got 2 options now, just keep going now since I'm already at 3 coats and just go back...

     Yeh you've gone through the carbon there. Can happen so easily with parts like that, a single layer of carbon is only ~0.2mm thick. The previous chips and cracks appear white for a different reason....
