Hello all!

My name is Josh, i'm from the UK , and i'm definitely what you'd class as a n00b when it comes to carbon skinning. 
I want to take on a few projects of skinning some automotive bits and pieces. Mainly interior trim pieces (stereo surrounds, handles etc) but i also want to look at skinning some exterior bits.  

I've never skinned anything in carbon, so this will be my first time! I feel like my best option at this stage is to get the XCR Carbon Fibre Skinning Stater Kit from easycomposites, however I am open to other options / buying the tools all separately. 

At this stage, before buying anything my main concerns are about covering the holes in the trim. I'm unsure if it would be easier to cut the hole out (like you would with vinyl wrap) or lay the carbon up, apply the first coat of epoxy, and then use a dremel to cut and sand the hole. Another concern is what to do with the backside of the part! I've seen videos of people using masking tape to stick the ends of the fabric down to the back side of the part, however i do not know what is done after all the epoxy has been applied! I'm sure i'll figure it all out. 

Hopefully when I've sorted out all my materials I'll post up a new topic showing my progress!

Both your ideas for the holes are used and both can work well depending on how the switches or vents fit back in and if there is a visible edge or a bezel that covers things up. 
Masking tape is a common way of holding the fabric in place until the resin has dried.
