Hi Leon,

You can run 2 layers of mesh to speed up the infusion, however this does have it's problems; if the resin flows too quickly through the mesh it will run ahead of the flow on the tool face this can lead to pinholes, the thicker the laminate is the worse this effect will become.

There is a trick to getting good results with a double mesh though; the resin flows very quickly at the start of the infusion (this is where the problem will be worst) to slow the infusion down you can restrict the flow of resin by not opening the line clamps fully at the beginning, as your resin flow begins to slow across the part you can open the clamps further to increase the rate. This will provide a quicker infusion overall.

Another thing you could try is to run more resin inlets onto the part this will allow a faster distribution without having to double up the mesh (which will consume quite a bit of resin) other than that there is trying to work somewhere cooler or mix the resin in a series of small batches as the resin infuses.

Thats some great work your doing... keep it up and keep us posted!

Thanks Paul,

considering the problem of pinholes I'll try to not open the line clamps fully at the begining. I interest about try to keep the resin in minimum temp to slower the reaction, is it ok to put the resin batch into ice batch during the infusion process?

you could put the pot into ice but that will only cool the outside volume of resin.  The problem with resin in large quantities in a typical pot is that the heat produced as it begins to cure rapidly builds up into a chain reaction and the whole pot will end up really hot, smoking and as a block of solid resin.

You can use a hardener with a longer pot life as one solution but it only delays the inevitable.  Its having such a large mass in one pot that helps cause the rapid reaction. if it was say in a bigger bucket spread out over a larger area, the heat would dissipate, however that usually isnt practical for infusion.

You are probably better off just mixing it in batches. eg max 1kg batch. start the infusion with 1kg (throttled if need be on the line clamp) and while its starting to infuse, mix another batch.  You should have enough time while it infuses to mix a batch and let it stand for 5-10 minutes to degas. If youve got a degas chamber then your turn around time will be even quicker.

If you still have issues, knock it down to half kilo batches after the initial kilo. The infusion will naturally slow right down anyway so the resin uptake shouldnt be too fast for you to keep up.

Are you using gelcoat or clear coat or is it only resin?
