One of the main hinderences that you may face being a marine laminator into other industry sectors is the view of marine composites as still very much being 'Bucket and Brush', standard, old-school-GRP laminating and that the experience of laminators from the marine industry is a little behind the times compared to Aerospace or Motorsport. That view is often misguided these days, especially in smaller craft production where Resin Infusion and closed moulding techniques are becoming more and more prevalent.

I don't know what processes you've been using to build the tenders but it might be worth padding out your CV a little to show your level of experience. If you've used spray equipment, resin infusion, etc. it will be viewed much more favourably into other sectors than just saying boat building for example and if you have experience of your own making parts, definitely include that as well - the more detail you can give about your experience, the better it will be received by prospective employers.

Thanks for the advise. I understand what your saying and that's very much the feeling I get when talking to people about making the jump to aerospace/Motorsport. I've mainly used wet lay and pre preg techniques but have no infusion experience. Just a shame your not given an opportunity to learn these techniques just because you've never done it before. PrePreg would be highly regarded so definitely make sure that you're getting that across to prospective employers. I worked in the marine industry for 9 years and we were only starting to tickle more advanced processes about 2-3 years ago such as Resin Infusion and it'll be years before PrePreg is widely used in the marine sector. If you're looking for work in Aerospace/Automotive/Motorsport; make sure that you cover the roles, repsonsibilites and experience you have so that you stand out from any other normal marine laminators.

Aside from places building multi-million pound custom boats, I don't really know of anyone using PrePreg in marine so that is definitely favourable for you!!

Your right that's where the money is.If your on the south coast you could try formaplex,urt or gtr

Aerospace is night an day from boat/grp and motorsport is night an day from Aero !

People tend to generalize they class aero as slow steady an easy 9-5 an autosport is mad rush,80/90 hrs week, small complicated high end parts an that's pretty true

In contracting motorsport guys work the winter an have the summer off or drop into aero for an easy cruise

Until you see some of it I doubt you could imagine how high end motorsport is now

Im currently working back in research but not as a lammy, as rob says the difference between boat building and motorsport is huge, aerospace is much easier in my opinion and you could look into getting some work in the aircraft interiors industry but they have horrible phenolic systems, which are nasty to work with but if you have been using poly and vinyl systems then you should be able to cope.

Thanks lads. It's a good insight because I've only worked in the marine industry. It would seem from what your saying that moving to aerospace would be the next step for me. I looked at bombardier and I'm assuming I would need to get aerospace experience on my cv first.
