Just wondering what material is best to create some flat carbon sheet off and to create a shinny finish

Hi Moranatang,

I use an old glass table and get decent results.

Hi Davro

Iam guessing that the table is prietty flat and straight do you apply any heat to give a postcure?

Also when you make the sheet do you apply a coat of resin let it cure then apply the laminate and vacuum on

The table is quite flat never put a dial indicator across it ...

Postcure for about 4 hours at 60c the table holds the heat so it slowly cools.

The process I use is resin infusion, so I layup the stack make sure I have 100% seal.
Then heat the table to about 80c while checking the vacuum is still 100% and then mix the resin, infuse the stack, clamp the infusion lines and cover over for about 8 hours of 80c then leave the table to slowly cool down to room temperature, then post cure.

What is the reason you do infusion ? over wet lay up

I like the cleanliness just mix the resin and then suck it into the stack, rather than messing about with a brush and resin runnning the risk of accidently messing up the weave with the brush during the wetting out process.
If you get 100% vacuum and degass the resin your virtually guaranteed a bubble free finish without any dry spots in the stack.

Also if you are using a polyester infusion resin the smell is kept at bay a little using the infusion process.

As Davro does, glass sheet for the tool and infuse. You'll get an impressive finish with good RTM ratio

Sandwich the carbon fiber fabric in between two pieces of plexiglass and two pieces of smooth Teflon release film. Push out any excess resin and air bubbles with a squeegee. Put some books or other flat heavy object on top of the top layer of plexiglass to weigh it down and give you some pressure and then put your feet up and wait.

There is no easier or quicker method of producing perfect flat cf sheets. I sometimes use window tint film instead of Teflon release film because it's cheaper and see-through so I can see the air bubbles to push put. You can also use one layer of teflon film and one layer of perforated release film so you have the best chance of removing all air bubbles but only one side will come out perfect with no additional work.

As Davro wrote, glass table or aluminium table are great for making carbon fiber sheets.
