Hi there, hopefully you can point me in the right direction.

I need to make a copy of this mount currently made from plastic. Im simplifying the shape and making a small mould so what I need to know is if casting resin would be a suitable material to replicate it in being that it would be solid resin and then bonded to an epoxy pre preg part. Please see picture of the mount below and to give an indication of the size it is 25mm x 25mm approx.

Thanks in advance

I've tried to do this before, but the casting resin wasn't strong enough to be used successfully as a mount.

My advice is to use a rivnut instead.

I can see what your saying. I have been giving it a good look over this morning and I think in going to make a normal carbon piece for the bottom section then bond a piece of nylon to screw into. I have never used casting resin before and thought I may be able to achieve a plastic moulded looking part when using it.

It was worth asking the question.

Many thanks

Yeh I followed the same train of thought when I first started dealing with parts with fasteners like that.

These days I follow a different approach, keep it simple. The simplest solution is generally always the best solution.

you could make the part to bond into the main section from polyurethane casting resin rather than epoxy, fix a rivnut/threaded insert into the mould before casting
