I'm  making something similar to this

http://www.rally-raidproducts.co.uk/image/cache/data/068-250x250.jpg
which holds this

So I need to take a mould off the back of the unit above to get the profile.  It needs to be a snug fit in the holder and I'm wondering what thickness of wax sheet would be best to get the profile correct, 2 mil or 5?

Also when the wax sheet is on, I've seen that some put packing tape over it to prevent sticking, is that a definite method because surely it means sanding work on the mould to remove any lines caused by the tape?

Hello

I am assuming your using epoxy. But if you are using polyester keep in mind polyester shrinks a fair bit. So your mold will be smaller and if you make your part out of that mold in polyester you will now have two shrinks.

I am not sure how much, if any, epoxy shrinks during curing.Perhaps someone can enlighten me on this?

Freemans Manufacturing have a great video clip on youtube on using sheet wax and especially on sealing and PVA application before molding.

You will have less mold work to do if you use wax and PVA rather than packing tape lines to flatten.

Hope this helps.
