B Group: Forum Members Posts: 25, Visits: 489	Hi all I want to make a split mould for this air intake for my car out of Pre peg ' I bought the uni mould kit but have since found out its no good with the higher temps with the pre peg Could I use the glass fiber mesh out of the uni mould kit with the high temp resin and the EG60 Epoxy Tooling Gelcoat . or if not can you make a split mould using the tooling pre peg ?

No on both accounts unfortunately. The chopped strand mat that comes with the Unimould needs the styrene that is in the Unimould resins, it wont work with epoxy. And you can make a split mould with.....

Thanks Hanaldo when you say 'if you need a service temperature higher than 80C then you need to do a post-cure out of the mould , is this once its cooked in the mould remove the part from the mould....

That's it. So follow the low temp cure cycle. When that has finished, demould the part, and put it back in the oven. If you have the precision control, it is best to do a very slow ramp rate of 0.1°C...

I would also bolt the two parts together prior to post curing, placing some release film between the flanges to remove any chance of them sticking together.

Yes, but he isn't talking about the mould, he is talking about the final component. If he makes the mould using Unimould then his best bet when curing the pre-preg is to follow the low temp cure cycl...

Is it a polyester or epoxy mould? How old is your release agent? How many applications?

it was the uni mold kit ' not very old easy lease and about 7 to 8 coats of the plug and moulds ' I'm not blaming the kit it was probably me doing something wrong I didn't cure the plug in the oven.....

Is this body filler on the surface? That stuff is too porous for just a chemical mould release and needs to be sealed first with a mould sealer/primer. Cheers, Lester

I've managed to remove most of the plug from the moulds and at first thought it might be a mechanical lock but if this was so would it flake off after breaking a bit . I sanded the plug with 1200...

1200 is wayyyy too fine for a pattern coating like high gloss coat. Need about 240 at the finest, preferably 180. In any case, unless the plug came out of the mould and only left the gloss coat on.....

Unless he sprayed it, wich would be very difficult because of the short pot life, he must have sanded after the final coat. The high gloss coat gives a nice finish, but not nice enough to go directly...

No the mould flanges were ok and yes just the plug clear coat is stuck to the mould ' I'm going to sand them both then try and coat them again the best i can EDIT Found my problem I must have ordered...

You are not alone. I have used the cleaner by mistake as well. The labels, although some of the words are a different colour, are similar and it is an easy mistake to make :-)

I made a new mould and this is my first go at pre peg ' I'm happy with the results but plan to make one more as one side looked like it was bridging as it was hard getting the vacuum bag in at both.....
