Group: Forum Members Posts: 11, Visits: 253	Good evening, Just a quick question. I've posted before about my project to repair ice hockey skates and I've done some of what I need to do. I'll explain my problem..... I cut everything to size and prepared before I mixed the resin. I wanted to do it in two parts as I had so much to do and didn't want it all to go to waste before I could get onto the second part. I weighed as half and half but there wasn't 100grams in the resin bottle unless my scales were so far out as there wasn't a whole lot left in the bottle and went with it. I done what I had to do and as I was doing it, the mixture started to go hard so thought result, it's working. Mixed the rest of mixture and started other skate. I had a feeling that there was too much hardener but as I weighed out the first batch I thought to just get on with it. Well, done the first part all ok and as I was sticking the backing down the cup went up on smoke......literally! Problem I have is one skate pretty hard on the front and the skate that got completed isn't curing in the same way only an hour later. If it doesn't go hard by the morning, what are my options? Also, am I stuck and need to order more epoxy from you guys to complete the last little bit of are there other options I can have quicker access to?y

Group: Forum Members Posts: 2.5K, Visits: 28K	Really really have to make sure your mix is accurate when you're working with epoxy, especially when you're doing such a small amount. You should always try to be within 1% of the mix ratio, so at 100 grams if you are more than 1 gram out either way then it can cause issues depending on how sensitive the epoxy is. If in doubt, it's always better to not proceed - no fun at all to clean up partially cured epoxy. Realistically, if it isn't curing then the only thing you can try is heat. If you can bake it at 60 degrees overnight then that will eliminate any doubt. If it goes hard then great (though I would still be suspect of the strength if the ratio was way out). If it doesn't go hard either after baking or after a few days at room temperature, then it will never go hard and you will need to scrape/clean it off with acetone. Not even as pleasant as it sounds.

I can't really bake them so hoping to run a hair dryer over the top of them for a while.i can't even get the peel-ply off as it's that tacky. I wouldn't be able to put hardener over the top would I?

Group: Forum Members Posts: 2.5K, Visits: 28K	Can't put hardener over the top, that will make it worse. It really needs to be mixed properly. Hair dryer won't work, it won't get hot enough. A heat gun might but it will take you hours, it's going to need a long time at a consistently elevated temperature. Could possibly put it in a box with a heat gun sticking in the side while you watch TV for a few hours, but that's obviously a risk. Realistically I think you are going to have to clean it all off and start again.

Group: Administrators Posts: 2.5K, Visits: 8.5K	IT sounds like you have 2 issues here, wrong mix ratio and also running out of pot life resulting in exotherm in the pot. The first issue can be resolved with accurate measuring and mixing of the resin and hardener. To avoid exotherm, mix a smaller batch size so you use the resin up before you run out of pot life. For Rapid Repair Resin to still be tacky suggests a poor mix ratio and/or poor mixing. Warren Penalver Easy Composites / Carbon Mods - Technical Support Assistant

Group: Forum Members Posts: 11, Visits: 253	I suspect it was wrong mixture even though I weighed it out. The scales must be really wrong because 50g of resin was well over half the bottle. I'm going to need to order another kit and start again then?
