Hi folks
....newby from Leeds....hoping to make some faux tortoiseshell sheet material, and it seems that epoxy is the way!

Ideally, sheets would be app. 20cm by 12cm, and thickness being in the region of 0.7mm.
Possibly using an amber resin base, with drops of resin pre-coloured in browns/black.

Had the idea of using a float glass bed, with cling film applied, (to form the sheet) and perhaps hairspray as a releasing agent....but this all from info. I've picked up on the net!

....So....which resin would members recommend, along with any tips on colouring??

BTW....I'm making a pickguard for a flat top acoustic guitar....like this....!

....any thoughts much appreciated!
I've just realised I've gone straight to something specific...when the idea was to say hello...."Hello!!"

Many thanks
Kev

Can't leave an introduction without a welcome! - Welcome to the forum Smile

For your pick guard, I would suggest our GlassCast Epoxy Surface Resin (amazing stuff, cures to a perfect gloss surface finish, UV stable, etc...) which you could achieve the tortoiseshell effect with by mixing some different translucent tinting pigments into tiny batches of the GlassCast and then combining them creatively, much as you suggest.

You might want to experiment with a layer of lightweight glass cloth that you pour the resin onto to add some tensile strength to the guard (so it can be peeled off, packed and shipped more safely. A glass cloth like this will go pretty-much transparent in the resin matrix so should not interfere with your ideas for the tortoiseshell pigmentation.

And, as for your release surface - just get a sheet of standard glass (float, like you say would be fine) and coat it with Easy-Lease Chemical Release Agent - you'll find you can get release after release from the glass coated in this way.

Can't wait to hear how you get on with this. It should be an interesting use for the GlassCast.
