Hi, I live in Durban South Africa and am a mech eng.
i however know very little about the theoretical part of composites (only what I studied and what I am now learning via reading). I have played around a little with small vacuum bagged CF/Aramid/S glass projects using wet layup but have much more to learn - which is why I am here.
Anyways, thanks for what looks to be a great forum at first.
Cheers

ja ! wat se jy
are you looking at a specific product to make ?
wealth of info here !
welcome
Ya, ek se niks nie.
Are you a saffer or have you learnt the lingo from one?
Shot for the welcome.
I have a few things to make, thank you for asking.
I'm looking at the requirements/design for some impact protection guards (I know, tough ask ) for off road bikes. Weight is of high importance, but I may use aluminium for some items and composites for others. I'm still doing the modeling of the actual bike (busy sorting out 3d scanning kit at present) and reading as much as possible. I've done plenty of stress analysis of isotropic materials but need to learn more about composites and brush up on my theory to try come up with a laminate spec. My gut feel is to just go rough estimate of stiffness, toughness and strength and then build and test and improve from there. As I said I'm doing a bunch of reading (white papers, online, a few books, and websites ) which is what led me here but there's a lot to go through. I'll post a thread later once I've done some work, but perhaps someone has an example here of an impact application with a final built and tested part to tickle my creative juices?
I'll also start looking at a fairing for a dual sport bike shortly and have made a reasonable add on carbon/aramid/glass fuel tank (struggling to find photos as my phone croaked but might manage to get some for the showcase section). I'd also like to make a nice cover for my tablet/netbook unit but I see some challenges there and would like to focus on the others first. Cheers and thanks again
