Davro,  knew you'd be up for a laugh!  The British carbon bake off!  Haha

Do you have a one piece alloy floor front to rear? Do you have a big enough surface to make a carbon version on? The biggest bit of glass I own is still being used, its bolted to the front of my house filling a gap. I think your carbon thingamabobs will be a big hit!

Lol The British Carbon bake off, fancy a photo shoot one day ? Im in North London ...

The floor on mine is in two peices passengers and drivers side with a tunnel in the center for the prop shaft and transfer box.
I plan on producing the floor pan in multiple sections with inspiration from the Delta wing and BLAT technologies Smile

Not need to unbolt the window just lay it up in situ, and do a vertical infusion !

no worries,all tips I learnt from my time in motorsports plus im also a scotsman and no that money is always tight Smile . It makes a big difference with the bag if its wet, also if you are ever doing internal bags a bit of release agent wiped on them makes it a lot easier to remove when cured.

Hanaldo, You laser eyes are in good calibration! Yeah those flanges are about 2 or 3 inch I think. You're all forgetting who your talking to tho. I'm a tight fisted Scotsman! Every square cm of material must be acounted for!!  lol   I'm never in a hurry (not trying to make a profit like I know some of you guys are) so a little time saving a bit of carbon is ok for me. Also all those flanges you see in the bonnet pic are only for bolted connections to another part of the mould, not for laying up carbon onto. I also always envelope bag things now, I'm useless at doing vac bag pleats so gave up on that.

 

Scottracing, Brilliant! I never realised that. I'v just read the tech sheet for bagging material and that makes total sense. See excerpt below  Maybe thats all Iv been doing wrong, I'll give that a try next time. This forum is great, I'd never have sussed that out.

So what is the pink bagging material like to use? Is it slightly stronger? Thinner? 50 micron instead of 80?

Vacfilm 200G is a hydrophilic material. Moisture and water act as plasticisers. The level of moisture content at time of useis therefore an important factor for successful performance. The higher the moisture content the more flexible theybecome. Conversely at lower moisture levels flexibility is limited.Do not store rolls vertically on their ends.

A quick tip with vac bags is to wet the bag. Get a garden plant spray gun. The finer the mist the better, spray a light coat of water over the bag and then fold it up until you are ready to use.
This makes it a bit more pliable, also if you arent too worried about small wrinkles from the release film on the bag side, scrunch it up into a ball it then makes it a bit easier getting more of it into the tight corners, and of course when you vac down make yourself some suitable dibbers to prod the bag into the features.
im hoping to start making some of my own stuff soon so will take pics as I go, but I'm really enjoying the carbon parts on the sevenesque cars :-)

Good point Hanaldo about the flanges.

I have a standard 4" flange on all my moulds now after having issues with moulds with smaller flanges.

about the bag...never had problems with the green bag and think its one of the better bagging materials I've used till now...
But I do understand your frustations BigGrin

Perhaps it is the size of the part, but your flanges look quite small on that bonnet? You'd be amazed how having a 4-5" flange on your moulds will help with layup times and eliminating leaks, it really does help keep things neat. 

Not a criticism just a suggestion! Ignore me if it's just an illusion!

Carbon build off!  Brain2Fast V davro     round 1, who's bling will be the lightest lol.


I am planning to replace every panel including the floortray, then start building a roof with doors and associated thingamabobs.

But really I am just learning and using this as a project to learn composite mould making and production.

Thanks for the encouraging comments (and videos,  lol).

I meant to say in my last post. I had a major hassle trying to get my last bag to seal. Spend a day chasing a leak, gave up and put a second bag over it. This also leaked but I managed to find it. The leak was just caused by the bag folding up on itself (not a leak at the gum tape) and I'm pretty sure the first leak wasn't on the gum tape either. I was really careful handling the bag as well because I knew it was my last 5 mtr.
I'v just been using the green type bag, is there another type I could try that wouldn't be so fragile but still good for getting into tight corners? Is the stuff for autoclaves any better (the purple/pink stuff)?

Nearly ready to start making the bonnet mould. This will be a 3 or a 5 part mould, not decided yet.


Davro, we both seem to have pretty similar projects on the go. Similar cars, same engines and making carbon body panels. Are we in a carbon build off??!  Wink
How much bodywork are you planning on replacing with carbon?
