Hi
I'm fairly new to casting resins i normally stick to metal but have decided to give some water clear figures a go. I'm using water clear polyester resin along with additional cure rtv silicone moulds. the problem I'm having is that although the moulds are perfect the resin is drying with a wrinkled surface, i have tried different ratios of catalyst and different tempratures with no luck :-/ has anybody had the same trouble and found a solution?

thanks

Are you casting in layers? I mean do not add you can not cast 1kg at the time for example...
Second thing possible solution; add some baby powder in you mould, just a small brush on the inside. This will remove the surface tension along the mould.
you'd probably still have to do a quick sand and polish to bring it to a high clear gloss

I'm only casting around 125g at a time so nothing massive. i tried mould release to break surface tension but it still did the same ill give the baby powder a shot and see if that makes any difference. thanks for the tip

just use a little bit a brush it on with a brush, and then brush everything of again.
Sounds weird if I read it again but you just have a tiny tiny layer of powder...
Also try to heat the silicone mould a bit.

Hi
If you are casting a full piece in a silicone mold, you might be experimenting a shrinkage issue due to exotherm reaction, wich is fairly normal in clear poliester. The reaction takes place from the inside to the outside, and polyester in full pieces will kick faster where there is more mass concentration of material. As silicone has its self release properties, when it shrinks,it separes easily from the mold surface, the interior of the piece cures faster than the surface, and this gives this wrinkled surface in my experience.
We cast clear polyester in silicone molds often in my studio, for making fake eyes for example. If we get a wrinkled surface,we have to sand and polish(with special paste).I have sometimes tweaked the cathalist ratio. For bigger batches than 100-200 gr using the minimum cathalist recommended by the manufacturer, and for smaller batches, you can try increasing it(you will have to test). But it will all depend on the material mass concentation you have, and your room temp. This material wont work the same in cold winter than in hot summer.
Clear PU resins can be an interesting option to avoid these issues.
 Hope it helps
