Hi there,

First, you cant use epoxy with chopped strand. At least not the one youe got. You can get powder bound copped strand, but its rubbish. You will need glass cloth really.

You can get a good glossy finish out of epoxy gelcoat. It will be a lot harder to sand than what youre used to, but you can get fillers to make it sandable, or just get a sandable gelcoat. Lastly, the paint product you use on it afterwards will have to be a polyurethane or maybe an epoxy primer followed by a polyurethane. Acrylics and waterbourne basecoats wont have good adhesion.

Hi

I've been in the marine industry for 7 years, mainly small repairs and have always used polyester based products, I like using polyester gel coat. Recently i've used some epoxy products.

Now I have just made my first plug mould from polyester. 2 coats of gel coat and 6 layers of cs. Using my mould I want to make my final piece using epoxy resin and mat. What I am unsure is it, is the finish. I will be painting it when it is complete, so should I still use a gel coat, maybe one that is epoxy compatible. or a filler and then paint. I like the idea of a gel coat as it is good for perfecting, but I am unsure going the epoxy route.

What are my options??
