I have been asked to design and make an updated version of the Classic Lotus 7 Bodywork.

The brief is Fully Enclosed Front Wings - Aggressive Styling - Still resemble the Lotus 7

I have been making a 1-10th scale model form foam and body filler. This is what we have so far.

Hi Warren

An interesting project, have you thought of wind tunnel testing ? at college we made a Perspex framed tunnel with scale models and we used smoke matches us for testing ventilation/heating system plus a small household fan to create the wind Smile  we secured small pieces of string  to the bodywork to show what was taking place with the aerodynamics, crude and simple but it worked well Smile

These days if he has access to CAD simulation, he can probably run a flow simulation on CAD easier than gaining access to a windtunnel or doing your own mini model DIY wind tunnel.  Remember the scaling calculations need to be right for it to be representative.  Where as a CAD model would be done at full scale.

I have run the basic shape through CFD Software, nothing too alarming. Smile
The large flat area behind the front wings will be a louvered vent to prevent pressure build up in the wheel wells and the undertray will extend to fill the gap between the front and rear wings, a bit like a running board. This will lead air into the rear diffuser.

In the past when I was racing we used to go testing at Oulton Park with bits of wool taped all over the car and have spotters taking pictures at different points on the circuit. All very high tech and lots of bemused faces.w00t

Managed to get a bit of detailing done on the model today. Used some carbon sheet off-cuts to make the splitter, rear diffuser etc. I have tried to represent (not very well) the louvered panel behind the front wings. This should reduce pressure build up in the wheel wells and also feed air along the side pods which in turn feed the rear diffuser. Client due tomorrow to have a look w00t

looking good!!!

Dont be surprised when the client wants to change x, y and z.  we all have different ideas of what looks best!  Part of the fun of the design game from scratch!

Taking the jump to full time must be scary like that!!
