Hi,
I’m new to these forums but can’t find an area specifically for repairs so sorry if this is in the wrong place but I have an 11kg, 21ft ocean racing ski (a narrow, sit on top kayak)made from a Kevlar-Nomex honeycomb sandwich. Washing the ski down this morningI noticed a tiny indentation to the hull, about 2ft behind the seat. More ominously, pressing around the area I can here the ‘crackle’ of what presumably is the delamination of the outer skin. The total area of delamination appears to be an oval shape of about 250mm x 120mm.
Do the indentations (there are 2 of them, smaller than a fingernail and so small in size as to only be just visible withyou eye running down the hull) indicate that the delamination was caused by impact or could they have been caused because of the delamination itself? I certainly don’t recall an impact and the hull is unmarked although for indentations as small as these there couldn’t have been much force. I ask because the ski is 8 months old and still under warranty for delamination but not if caused by impact. Before I speak to the company I bought it from I’d like to be a bit more informed.
Also, as a repair will be necessary, would drilling holes and resin infusion or a special bonding agent be the route and would it be necessary to draw a vacuum to pull the outer skin to the honeycomb? I don’t have the equipment (or the confidence!) but is this a specialist job or could I entrust this to any competent boat builder/repairer?
