A quick question as I have been unable to find a definitive answer on the web site!

What is the as-supplied colour of the Uni-Mould gelcoat? I have seen the video where it is black, but the MSDS shows 'miscellaneous'. I am looking to make a mould in which I will lay up an Easy-preg & Vari-preg part. The mould shape is essentially a 5-sided box (laying up the part inside the box) with relatively small fillets in the corners, so I suspect I will have to cut the Easy-preg to get it properly into the corners. If the tool gel coat is black, I suspect I will struggle to see I have a neat joint line, whereas a lighter colour would make this easier. If the colour is black, can it be changed (e.g. with a white pigment) to help - if so which type of pigment is suitable (epoxy, polyester, polyurethane), or is there some other clever way?

Hi Toolchimp,

Sorry no-one picked up this question when you posted it, I've just spotted it so I thought I'd answer for the benefit of others.

Unimould tooling gelcoat is black as we supply it. Black is great for seeing scratches and so is generally favoured for tools (so you can see how well your polishing is going etc.) but I agree than in your specific situation a brighter colour would make seeing the line that you've made with your Easy-Preg a little easier, although I think it practice (and I've done the exact thing you're describing myself) you would not have any problem seeing how well aligned the prepreg was.

However, if you really do want to re-colour the gel then I would suggest adding some white pigment to it to make a grey gelcoat. Our Polyester Colour Pigments would be compatible (and the right choice) for the Uni-Mould Tooling Gelcoat.

I hope this helps,

Matt
