Group: Forum Members Posts: 3, Visits: 28	Hi I am looking for some advice on a project - I want to make a coffee table top from resin and a have a few basic questions which is the best product to do this with looking at the Fast Cast Polyurethane Casting Resin would this be suitable? final size will be approx 3.5 to 4 cm deep & 120 cm x 60 cm and I see doing 2-3 pours to allow it dry/cure - and thinking it will need approx 25 ltr's as there will be embedded items in the resin. Basic question - will the resin stick to a steel surface or can i use a steel bench table top to pour onto the sides will be metal bars clamped into position to give the frame size. Once dried/cured can the resin be worked and polished - and if so with what methods materials? Many thanks

Group: Forum Members Posts: 3, Visits: 28	I had considered a clear casting-resin the type used in casting jewellery and the type you see used on clear toilet seats - but had the impression that using such a large surface area and being up to 4cm thick would mean that this product would not be suitable - levelling bubbles/temperature control / number of pours required / the surface remaining tacky and also not being tough enough as a coffee table would suffer from marks too readily. I may be wrong but felt that Polyurethane Casting Resin would be better suited to the job; as I decided the table top needed to be black resin with some embedded objects - also I believe it can be more readily finished - sanded polished etc, so eliminating any issues in casting - I am I correct? my inspiration comes from a table made in the 1960s in black resin - pictured here:

If not transparant, it won't need to be massive, you could add a block in the middle with 2cm from top, sides. So you just pour that volume instead of a massive block of resin. Group: Forum Members Posts: 3, Visits: 28	well to make it more complicated yes and no - the main body would be black resin using filler to bring the cost down. With a final pour of clear resin only 2mm thick to finish the look of the table and to enable you to see the objects embedded in the resin. So a resin sandwich sort off. Un-like the picture the objects would be across the full size of the table - so would need to use a complete block of resin - so I cant just pour the middle section. Yes it will be expensive as will use a lot of resin per table.
