G'day guys, im needing some help with a project of mine for a friend, he's gotten me to make up a few test sets of free diving flippers, ive pretty much copied a professional set from him, ive gotten the tapper (thin at one end thick at the other) and thickness (1mm to 2mm) correct but I still can't get near the flexability as the professional set, wondering if theres a additive or something i can mix with my infusion resin to make it more flexible as theres seems stupidly flexible, i was also thinking maybe i go away from just using 2x2 twill carbon and maybe add in some unidirectional carbon? Any help will be much appreciated ๐Ÿ‘

It is possible they are using a more flexible resin or they could have a different fabric inside that has not got the stiffness.

UD cloth aligned down the fin would make it stiffer not more flexible.

Maybe the set you are copying are not full carbon, just thin skin over glass .. or all glass with black pigmented resin.

If you need them more flexible try using glass or flax fibre instead of carbon. If you 'need' it to be carbon make it thinner, or use most of your plies at +/-45 degree layup to make it less stiff.

I have just come to the end of a long R and D process of exactly this in carbon and glass.

Its not easy and it has to be exact.

You need uni core and multi direction skins.
I dove tail my uni otherwise you get stress lines, this gives a diamond pattern.

If you go 200g more or less you will end up with too stiff or too flexible.
If the fabric compresses more than another they will be more flexible.
I have a spreadsheet of layups I've tried.

This is my first time writing on a forum so I'm not sure of how things are done.
I would share my findings with you but not publicly.
In short though, 4 layers of 200g carbon UD with skins of 200g carbon Twill with a feathering from 250mm too the tip will save you many hours and pounds of materials.

Sorry I don't know why the picture is the wrong way up.
You'll have issues with dry spots where the resin struggles to penetrate through tight Uni.
Even with heat and infusion resin.

I find making Glass fins much more productive and durable.

Wow that is so cool, yeah i had dramas with it breaking along the straight over laps, i might try put some glass in with it and try your technique and see what i can produce ๐Ÿ˜

Could you make the bulk of the laminate +/-45 fiber orientation instead of 0/90?  The visual twill ribs would run either along the length or across the width of the foil and it might look funny but it will be much more flexible.  If you need unidirectional fiber just put it in the middle where it doesn't increase the stiffness.

There are also some black fiberglass/fake carbon fiber products or very low quality carbon grades that will be much less stiff but not way less strong overall - might be an option if it has to look like carbon but bend like 'glass.
