Hi,

I was hoping to get some tips on getting my final result of skinning my side mirror covers looking good. This is my first time doing anything with carbon fiber and my first attempt did not go so well. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great either. Particularly, ended up with this really ugly seam in one spot because when I was wrapping all the way around I came to a point where the cloth bunched up and the only way to get it down was to cut it and fold it over itself. I wish I had taken a picture of it, but I already peeled off the carbon fiber and sanded down all the dried resin off the part. Before I attempt it again, I'd like to figure out how I can get it fully covered without having any seam or fold.

I am using these products
210g 2x2 Twill 3k ProFinish Carbon Fibre
XCR Black Epoxy Basecoat

maybe it is not as shapable since it has the stuff sprayed on it to keep the fibers in place, but I don't know because I've never used regular carbon fiber either. Is there any trick to getting it all down without having to cut and fold it on itself? Would you recommend doing it with two pieces of cloth instead of one? I know I would def have a seam doing that though.

Here is an image of the mirror I am wrapping

The area which gave me a problem was the very front right tip, which I came to last.

Here is an image of the stock carbon fiber mirrors. The do look like they have a bit of a split, so perhaps two pieces using the same seam may be ok, but if it is possible to do it seamless, it would be preferred. I'd also be worried about having the save vertical seam I had on my first attempt where the inner side (not visible) meets the front.

I've seen other aftermarket covers that don't have that same seam / split to it, like this one. It's also worth noting that ther eare also other images I see online that call their product 'oem'
which do not have any seams as well.

Any advice would be welcome. Thanks

You would almost always need a cut line of sorts with that.  You would place it on the front inner vertical edge.  The fabric should do the front, top and inside then as one piece with the small cut line.  Make a paper template and you will see what I mean.  You can run a heat gun over the ProFinish cloth to soften the binder slightly which should help with drape and conforming to the shape. It would be easier with normal cloth and nipping the same cut line. As the cut line is small it should lay up ok with out falling apart too much.

Thanks! I'll give that a go and see how I make out. Smile
