Hi all

I'm looking at making a frame for my motor bike. It's a section that bolts onto the main frame and supports the weight of the rider and exhaust. It is held onto the bike via 4 x8mm bolts.
Around the head of the bolt there is not much gap between bolt and the main frame. So I am worried it would not have enough meat to support the weight. Any advice please.
Any advice of how much this would cost to produce?

Hey Andy,
I am also new here.  Not a lot of experience yet in these types of projects but I do have some questions about your use and expectations, if you don't mind.  Maybe these questions will help determine what your potential options may be?  First, other than the part looking very cool, what are your objectives?  An attempt to lower the overall weight?  Is it mainly for tracking the bike?  Or it's your street daily use bike?  Have you seen the video showing how to build the carbon fiber bike frame? https://www.easycomposites.co.uk/vacuum-bagging-sealant-tape/making-a-carbon-fibre-bike-frame-start-to-finish

More on point to your original question about
"
enough meat", I don't know where the sweet spot would be between making those mounting points comprised of solid carbon fiber versus using an aluminum bushing and carbon fiber around the bushing.  From a mounting perspective, the bushing would prevent a lot of pressure from the bolt head against your carbon fiber sub frame, but I don't know if that matters or not.  Maybe the carbon fiber would withstand that side squeezing pressure as well as the downward weight of the rider.  And if you're an aggressive rider, how much added stress will butt wiggling when setting up for corners?

Last point, what about the temperature from the exhaust?  Maybe it's still low enough temp to not matter, but it's a question that I would ask myself.  If you have access to one of those infrared thermometers, maybe you can get a reading in that area after a hard run?

I understand that it would be a very cool project and I hope that it's something that is attainable because I have an idea for a similar build part which has many complex angles & support tubes, however, mine is currently made of square aluminum tubing and not round, as yours is.  Hopefully someone else will be able to chime in and inject some cool suggestions.  Best wishes!

You would really want to redesign this to suit composites. This is a structure designed for metal construction, if you simply copied this it would not be very efficient and you would likely have some weak points or it would need to be heavy for what it is.
